The town of Orono, Maine is built on Wabanaki land, located in the homeland of the Penobscot Nation. Shortly before the American Revolutionary War, colonists of European descent began to farm and mill here, and Orono was officially incorporated in 1806. Named in honor of the influential Penobscot leader, Chief Joseph Orono, the town is home to the flagship campus of the University of Maine. Today, Orono is a vibrant little community, with an abundance of recreational trails, paddling on the Stillwater River, a fledgling brewery scene, small businesses, educational opportunities, and an array of community events and programming.
